Pat graduated with honors from the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Pat then continued for a year of graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, specializing in the field of feedback control systems. Following his studies, Pat joined Oilquip, Inc. where he worked as a mechanical engineer and marketing manager, primarily in the areas of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems, and related controls. In 1984, Pat took on an assignment in Europe for the company, residing in France.

In 1988, he received a French D.E.S.S. degree, the equivalent to an L.L.M., in Intellectual Property Law from the University of Paris, graduating with honors. Pat then joined the firm Cabinet Beau de Loménie in Paris, where he worked on international patent prosecution and other matters until 1990. In 1990, Pat returned to the U.S. to study law at Tulane University Law school, where he received his J.D. cum laude in 1993. Upon graduation, he joined Arnold, White and Durkee in Houston and, in 1994, joined Foley & Lardner's Milwaukee office. In 1997, Pat joined Fletcher Yoder.

Pat's practice focuses primarily on transactional intellectual property matters and client counseling. He is particularly familiar with: all phases of patent preparation and procurement; pre-litigation counseling, including design around counseling, non-infringement analysis and opinion preparation; licensing; and portfolio management. Pat's technological familiarity includes: mechanical and electromechanical devices; software and firmware-based control systems; industrial controls, automation and manufacturing; vehicle systems and controls; natural resource exploitation; and a range of consumer product and product manufacturing arts, including outdoor sporting goods.

Pat is admitted to the Texas and Wisconsin bars, and he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Pat is also a registered professional engineer and has served on the faculty of Marquette Law School.
